Vanishing Act — Bransfield Strait, Antarctica

The mountains are disappearing. Shot from the water of the Bransfield Strait, this image captures a moment of atmospheric erasure — cloud and mist rolling in from the right, consuming the peaks as they go, reducing solid rock and ice to suggestion and then to nothing. The left side of the frame holds firm: dark, jagged rock faces streaked with snow, a glacier calving face at the waterline, the kind of geological permanence that makes the encroaching cloud feel all the more relentless. The water in the foreground is flat and dark, indifferent to what is happening above it.

The title earns itself. There is no drama in the conventional sense — no storm, no breaking wave — just the quiet, inevitable process of a landscape being swallowed by its own weather. Rendered in monochrome, the image strips away colour and leaves only tone: the near-black of the rock, the luminous white of the snow and cloud, and the soft grey of the mist doing its work. At 36×24″, the texture of the rock faces and the fine gradation where mountain meets cloud become fully resolved, and the glacier face at the waterline reveals its detail.
