On the Rocks — Paradise Bay, Antarctic Peninsula
Photographed from the water of Paradise Bay, this image is built around a single, monumental iceberg — its eroded tower rising from a flat, tabular base, the whole mass caught in the grey half-light of an overcast polar day. Behind it, more ice dissolves into low cloud and sea mist, the horizon blurring into a soft, indeterminate white. The foreground water is dark and textured, wind-ruffled and restless, a counterpoint to the absolute stillness of the ice above it.
The title is a quiet joke. "On the rocks" means something specific at a bar — a drink served over ice — and Antarctica has ice in quantities that would satisfy even the most demanding bartender. But the humour is the entry point, not the subject. What the image actually delivers is scale: a mass of ancient glacial ice, calved from a continent, drifting through one of the most remote stretches of water on earth. The monochromatic palette strips away colour and leaves only tone and geometry — the hard vertical of the tower, the horizontal sweep of the base, the soft gradation of mist dissolving into cloud. At 36×24″, the surface texture of the iceberg face and the fine tonal transitions where ice meets sky become fully resolved, rewarding extended viewing.
