Flying Solo — Bransfield Strait, Antarctica
Photographed from the deck of a vessel navigating the Bransfield Strait, this image captures a chinstrap penguin at the precise moment it launches itself clear of the water — a behaviour known as porpoising, used to breathe and survey at speed. The frame freezes a split second of pure, instinctive motion: the penguin fully airborne, water erupting around it, the Southern Ocean stretching flat and featureless behind. It is the kind of image that exists for a fraction of a second and demands everything from the equipment and the photographer to capture.
The square format suits the subject. The penguin occupies the frame with authority, the tight crop eliminating distraction and placing all attention on the form, the spray, and the eye. Shot on a Nikon D850 with a 500mm telephoto lens, the image required extensive post-processing to upscale the crop, restore fine detail, and recover the penguin's eye — a painstaking process that preserves the authenticity of the moment without sacrificing resolution at print scale.
Available in a gallery-quality configuration — a color print on Fuji Crystal DP II matte paper, protected by a matte UV lamination, permanently bonded to a 3mm Aluminum DiBond substrate, and float-mounted in a 1″ profile silver aluminum ArtBox frame. Full print specifications and materials →
