Vigilance — Framed Atlantic Puffin Fine Art Photography Print | Richard H Knight

Vigilance — Dyrhólaey Cliffs, Iceland

Photographed on the Dyrhólaey cliffs on Iceland's south coast, this image captures a mating pair of Atlantic puffins outside their nest engaged in mutual vigilance — one bird facing one direction, the other looking directly at the camera. Together, they surveil the full 360 degrees of their exposed clifftop position. It is a behavior as practical as it is visually striking: two birds, side-by-side, fully aware of their world. Shot on a Nikon D850 with a 500mm lens at 1/1600 of a second, the fast exposure preserves every detail — the vivid orange bills, the distinctive plumage, the alert posture of birds that are simultaneously at rest and on guard.

The two birds form a single balanced unit, their symmetry almost architectural, the tension between stillness and watchfulness giving the image an energy that a single-bird portrait rarely achieves.

At 24×36″, the feather detail, the texture of the bills, and the precise geometry of the pair's positioning are fully expressed — a print that rewards close looking and reveals more the longer you stand in front of it. The cool, clean palette of the Icelandic cliffs and scrub grass suits contemporary, Scandinavian-influenced, and nature-focused interiors.

Available in two gallery-quality configurations — a giclée print on Hahnemühle Pearl paper mounted on ALDibond in a 0.4" artbox frame or, a silver halide Fuji print under matte acrylic in a 1" profile artbox frame, both with a 75-year color guarantee. Full print specifications and materials →
